Your credit card won’t help you much in La Manzanilla, even a 200 peso note (approx. $20 US) can be difficult to use. Small bills are best in small towns where change is often hard to come by. The best way to get pesos is to use the ATM in Melaque or Barra, and credit cards are accepted in restaurants and shops there. When using the ATM you only pay the “out of system” fee to your bank and get the official exchange rate with no commission.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, your cell phone won’t work in La Manzanilla but isolation is part of the charm. Cell phones do work in Melaque/Barra. Another option is to buy a local phone card, about $8.00 US, and use a pay phone in town, they do work.
